Cone bits or tri-cone bits are the most commonly used rotary blasting hole bits. The drill bit has three or more cones ("rollers" or "tools"). These cones are made of hardened steel teeth or tungsten carbide inserts of different shapes, lengths and spacings.
The bearings in the roller cone bit must be flushed with compressed air to keep it clean and cool.
Roller bits have crushing and cutting functions, and can cut hard rock formations. Their design is such that when the cone rotates, each tooth will put pressure on a different position at the bottom of the hole. The teeth of adjacent vertebrae mesh with each other, so that self-cleaning occurs.
Generally speaking, compared with the drill bit for drilling soft formations, the speed of the hard cone bit is much slower and the bit weight is much higher.
